Description

• Hook: Standard nymph hook, sizes 10-16.
• Thread: Black or brown.
• Tail: Guard hairs from a hare’s mask.
• Ribbing: Fine gold or copper wire.
• Body: Dubbed with hares ear fur, which gives it a natural, buggy appearance.
• Thorax: Thicker dubbing of hares ear fur, sometimes mixed with a bit of synthetic dubbing for added sparkle.
• Wing Case: Turkey tail or similar dark material, coated with a bit of head cement for durability.

Fishing Techniques

1. Dead-Drifting: Cast this nymph upstream and let the nymph drift naturally with the current. This technique is effective in both rivers and streams, as it mimics the natural movement of nymphs.
2. Indicator Nymphing: Use a strike indicator to help detect subtle takes. The Hare's Ear is particularly useful in deeper waters where visibility is low.
3. Euro Nymphing: This involves a tight line and no indicator. The Hares Ear Nymph works well due to its weight and natural appearance, allowing it to drift naturally in the current.
4. Dry-Dropper: Pair it with a buoyant dry fly. The dry fly acts as an indicator, and the Hare's Ear drifts below. This is effective in shallow waters where trout might be feeding just below the surface.

• Rivers and Streams: Particularly effective in clear, fast-flowing rivers and streams. Look for riffles, runs, and pools where trout are likely to be feeding
• Lakes: Use a slow retrieve or let it sink and then use a lift-and-drop motion to mimic natural nymph movement
• New Zealand: The Hare's Ear is a staple in New Zealand waters, especially in the Taupo region. It’s effective year-round but particularly during mayfly hatches
