A Taupo jig rig is a specialized fishing setup designed for targeting trout in Lake Taupo, New Zealand. It typically consists of a heavy lead weight, a series of dropper lines, and a selection of small flies.  

Components of a Taupo Jig Rig:

• Lead weight: The weight is usually a cylindrical shape and can range from 1 ounce to 4 ounces, depending on depth and fishing conditions.
• Dropper lines: These are short lengths of monofilament or fluorocarbon line that attach to the lead weight and hold the flies. Typically, there are 2-3 dropper lines, each with a different length to present the flies at different depths.  
• Flies: A variety of small flies are used on a Taupo jig rig, including smelt patterns, woolly buggers, and nymphs. The most popular sizes are #10 and #12.  

Fishing Techniques:

1. Choose the right location: Lake Taupo is a vast body of water, so it's important to choose a productive fishing spot. Look for areas with structure, such as reefs, drop-offs, and weed beds.
2. Assemble the rig: Tie the lead weight to the end of your line, then attach the dropper lines to the lead weight at the desired depths. Finally, tie on your flies.
3. Cast and retrieve: Cast your rig out and allow it to sink to the desired depth. Once it reaches the bottom, begin jigging the rod up and down with short, sharp movements. This action will make the flies dance and attract fish.
4. Set the hook: When you feel a bite, strike firmly and reel in the fish.

Tips:

• Use quality tackle: Invest in a good quality rod, reel, and line to ensure that you have the best chance of success.
• Pay attention to depth: The depth of the fish will vary depending on the time of year and water temperature. Use a fishfinder to locate the fish and adjust your rig accordingly.
• Experiment with different flies: Try different colors and sizes of flies to find what works best for the current conditions.
• Practice your casting and retrieving: The more you practice, the better you will become at jigging for trout.
